How to Add a “Read More” Link to Your WordPress Website

wordpress website assistant and wordpress blog support2012 has been a very busy year! I haven’t really had a chance to think about blog posts on internet marketing or social media marketing. So when a client of mine asked me how to create a “Read More” link on his WordPress website I knew a blog post was born. Thanks John!

How to add a “Read More” link to your WordPress website

At the bottom of the article, or where ever you want to place a link type the words “Read more” or “Click to read more”. You can add any phrase you can dream of. I like to stay away from “Read More Here” it just sounds a lot more spammy to me.

At the bottom of the article, or where ever you want to place a link type the words “Read more” or “Click to read more”. (In this example, I’m using “See my Google+ business profile”, but the same steps apply to the read more link or any link on a webpage.)

(I’ve bolded the text for the link, just so you can easily see it.)

Go to the URL of the piece you want to link to highlight and copy it (ctrl c). You’ll be highlighting the web address for the piece you want to link to in the address bar portion of your browser. (Blue highlighted portion) Then click on the Insert/edit link button in the tool bar.

Return to your website page where you want to add the link. Highlight the “Read more” text and click on the “Insert/edit link” button in your toolbar. (The button looks like a chain.)

You’ll see this screen pop up.

Click inside the URL text box and ctrl V to paste the URL address you just copied. Make sure there is only 1 http:// in the text box or you’ll get an error when people click on it.

Add a keyword rich title to the link. People will not see this, but Google will! It’s part of the behind the scenes SEO that WordPress does so well. ( I <3 WordPress!)

You can have the link open in a new tab, which keeps your site open for them. Or you can have the link open in the current window. Either way works.

Now you should see an underline under your “Read more”. If you do, you’ve successfully added the read more link! Congratulations!

Now save the page and check the link to make sure it’s working properly. There’s a couple of different ways to check the link.

  1. If you don’t want to leave the post dashboard, hover over your new link and right click on it. You should see a pop up menu, left click on “Open Link in New Tab”. Click on the new tab that was open and make sure it opened to the correct information.

  1. On the post dashboard page, you could click on the “View post” text link just above the title of your post, then click on the “Read more” link on the actual post.

Now you’ve just added a “Read more” link to your post, imagine the possibilities!!!
