In this video, you’ll learn how to send to just a segment of your email list and the different segments that MailChimp gives you to send to.
Sign in your MailChimp account and go to the dashboard. I can either go up here to the left-hand side where it says campaign or I can go over to the right-hand side to this dark gray button that says create campaign. Either way, I’m going to be able to go to the exact same place inside of MailChimp. Click this dark-grey button that says create campaign and choose Regular Campaign.
Setting up a List Segmentation
Setting up segmentation is the same for every single type of campaign or automation. Click on this group or new segment. On subsequent emails, you can click the saved or pre-built segment button and send to the same segment we’re sending to today.
The words group and segment are interchangeable right now. Groups are an organizational structure inside of MailChimp. When you’re sending and email, y0u’re actually sending to a segment. A segment can include the group. Segmentation is used to send emails.
It’s gonna say our list name, plus the number of subscribers. You’ll have three radio buttons, the entire list, saved or prebuilt segments and group or new segment. The button on the right-hand side, group and new segment, click on that.
This is the segment that usually comes up when you go in here. “Subscribers match any of the following conditions date added is after the last campaign emails are sent.” So we’re gonna change this. If you click on the down arrow next to date added box which is on the left-hand side of the screen, you’ll see all sorts of wonderful things you can do with segmentation. We are going to concentrate on groups right this moment and then I’ll go back and explain what these are.
Creating a Segment with your MailChimp Groups
Choose the group ‘paying customers’’. We have two groups in this list, inactive customers and paying customers. And then paying customers are one of and if you click this down arrow on the second button on the page in this segment editor area, you’re gonna get one of, all of, or none of. Well, of course, none of, you’re gonna send to your entire list, except for this one group. One of and all of can be used different ways.
In the ‘Subscribers Match’ area ‘One of’ and ‘all’ of can be used different ways. Basically, you just have to play with it and see which works on your list. So we’re going to send to the group ‘paying customers’ > ‘one of’ > ‘Kickstarter Customers’.
And to know how many people are in this segment or this group in this list we’re gonna go up to the top again to this gray button, “Update Recipient Count’ and click on that. We have 110 recipients in this ‘Kickstarter Customers’ group.
Creating Multiple Segments with your MailChimp Groups
Send to everyone in two groups
Now if I want to send to all my ‘Kickstarter Customers’ and my ‘One-on-one training customers’, this is how I would do it. I would click add, this plus button with the add next to it that’s on the lower left-hand side. And again, I’m gonna have the three drop-down boxes.
I’ll change the first drop-down box to ‘Paying Customers’. The second box will become ‘one of’. The third box will contain ‘One-on-one training customers’. Then click the recipient count to update it. It gives me 158 recipients. Now I’m sending to all the ‘Kickstarter Customers’ and all the ‘One-on-one training customers’.
Send to everyone that belongs to both groups
If I wanted to send to people who were ‘Kickstarter Customers’ and ‘One-on-one training customers’, I would go up to this box ‘Subscribers Match’ > ‘all’ of the following conditions and update the Recipient Account. Now, I’ve three recipients that match these conditions they are in the kick-starters’ group and in the one on one training customers group.
For this ‘Subscribers Match’ ‘any’ and ‘all’ is the key to refining the segment you’re sending to.
All the wonderful things MailChimp segmentation can do!
You could send a simple campaign to an automation. You can segment by ‘started workflow’, ‘completed workflow’, ‘not started workflow’, ‘not completed workflow’. Automation is beautiful.
This is a wonderful way to follow up with people during or after their automation campaign. Ask them questions about the campaign or send a survey to see if the campaign could be better.
If people ‘opened’, ‘clicked’ ‘was sent’, ‘did not open’, did not click’ and ‘was not sent’. Let’s use, ‘Campaign Activity’ ‘was not sent’ ‘this weeks roundup’ If we update the recipient count, we have 26 recipients. We could then send them our latest newsletter. They subscribed after the last email was sent.
This is replied or has not replied. Again you can go into any other campaign.
The Date Added
This is another way to send today people who were added after the last campaign was sent. You could send them before, the same date as the last campaign was sent, is within the last number of days, is not within the last number of days.
Specific Email Client
You could send one to people who are only using Outlook 2007. You may wanna do this if you’re having problems with your emails rendering correctly in Outlook. Use the text in the email which is the second choice for the campaign and send a text as email which Outlook hopefully won’t mess up.
It’s wonderful, all these top email clients, mobile email clients, webmail clients. If you want to send a special gesture to only mobile viewers, perfect. This is an awesome way to introduce a discount and reward people for opening on their mobile.
Update Email Address or Account Info
If they change their email or change their info, could be that they purchased something new, they change their email address or their regular address or something has changed in their record.
Send to a specific language on your list. MailChimp tries to detect their language from their browser when they sign up.
This is the one I love. The location. The location is within 25 miles of Yorktown Heights, New York and we validate this location. Perfect. And then when we update the recipient account. She has 182 recipients that are within 25 miles of Yorktown Heights, New York.
The way that MailChimp does this is when somebody signs up their email list they capture their IP address. Then they use that IP address. An IP address actually tells people where you’re located at when you are using your computer. So MailChimp uses that IP address to locate them. One of the things about that is if they sign up on vacation in the Caribbean and now they live in New York that IP address is going to be a little bit wacky until they open an email and the IP address corrects.
You can do all sorts of stuff, if in the country, is in a state, has a zip. The zip is only if you have requested and stored their zip in MailChimp. So if you had asked them for a Zip Code when they had signed up for the list, you can use this as Zip. And then the mileage is like 25 to 200 miles. This is great if you have inperson physical event that you need to fill. Perfect. I love this location thing.
Those are the little stars on the list. You have all sorts of greater than, less than, is, is not.
She has an inactive group and she also has a Paying Customers group, which we already saw.
The merge fields are what, the fields are on your sign-up forms. Email address, the first name, the last name. If you want to do a special for Bob, you could send an email to everybody named Bob on your email list. Kind of cute. Oh, today is the Bob’s discount day’.
Static segment is a segment that you’ve already created in the past to use to send an email to. You can use that static segment here, or you can click that second radio button and use that past segment.
So one of the good things about MailChimp is to have two or three ways to do the same thing inside of MailChimp.
Thanks for joing me on MailChimp help! See you next week.
