Learn how to create tags and groups for your MailChimp Audience

Sign in to your account.

In the upper left navigation area click on Audience.

Go to Manage Audience and Manage Contacts. In the managed contacts list you can add both Groups and Tags.

What are Groups and Tags?

Groups are an organizational structure for your MailChimp account

The difference between groups and tags is this… People can see groups if you allow them to see groups. People can choose what group they want to be in for themselves.

If you want people to be able to see groups and choose for themselves, choose checkboxes, radio buttons or dropdown.

If you don’t want people to see the groups choose don’t show these groups on my signup forms.

How to create Groups in Mailchimp

Click create groups.

Add a group category. This is an overall arching category. Then add your sub-categories.

Here’s an example: I’m gonna do two groups and allow people to choose which group they want to be in. The groups will be Monthly email or Quarterly email. So the Group Category would be Frequency or Send Frequency and the sub-categories would be Monthly and Quarterly.

That’s how you create groups in Mailchimp.

How to create Tags in Mailchimp

Go to Audience. Make sure you’re on the right audience.

Click on the Manage Audience down arrow and click on manage Contacts.

Then click on Tag. Click on Create Tag. Type the tag in here.

You’ve created tags in Mailchimp!

More about Groups and Tags

You can create as many tags as you want to and as many groups as you want.

Tags can never be seen by anybody joining your list. Tags are only for your list organization.

Groups can be seen by people joining your list and so they are an external organizational structure or as tags can’t be seen by anybody and are an internal organizational structure.

Optimize

The object of Groups and Tags is to segment your list so people only receive emails they’re interested in receiving. The tighter your Audience is segmented the more likely they are to stay on the list and purchase from you.

So think of what you sell. How can you divide your list so that you can sell them what they want to buy? And then tag or group accordingly.

I hope that was clear because this can be a very confusing subject.

How do I set the tag or automation up that they DONT receive the welcome sequence to that audience? I have set up a tag and the subscriber is getting the optin email (the one I want them to get) but they are ALSO getting the the welcome funnel to that audience as well (which I do not want).
