Question: How do I keep spam email addresses from signing up for my list?
My client woke up to find 70 new subscribers in their inbox which is, woo-hoo!
But, they only receive about one to two new subscribers per week.
The next day they woke up to another 147 subscribers.
When they opened up their list they found email addresses with the domain mail.ru.
They asked, “How do I keep that from happening in the future “and what do I do now that it’s happened?”
How to fix it in MailChimp
1. Subscription form reCAPTCHA
To keep this from happening in the future, you want to set up a reCAPTCHA for your MailChimp subscription form.
Go to Settings, List Name and Defaults.
Under Form Settings click Enable reCAPTCHA.
Scroll down and click Save List and Campaign Defaults.
This should give you some defense from subscription bots.
2. Clean your list
Now go back to the list and find everybody that signed up in the last couple of days.
Click on Date Added at the top of the list screen. Click until it shows the most current subscribers.
Look for your spam email addresses. In this video, the spam email address @mail.ru was automatically cleaned by MailChimp and no further action is required from you.
The other email address in the video was a @gmail.com email address and MailChimp couldn’t tell it was a spam address.
To check to see if an email address is spam I take a couple of steps.
- Look at the email address details by clicking on the email address in the list. You’ll find the default language of the computer viewing the email address. It will also show you the place the person was when they subscribed. It shows their timezone I’ll be able to see physically, where they’re from.
- Google the email address to see if it comes back with a spam report.
Now unsubscribe the spam email address. Do not delete it. So this email address can never be subscribed again. Click Unsubscribe and Confirm and now this person is unsubscribed.
Repeat as needed.
Now your list should be nice and clean with no spam.
